I have a favor to ask if you live in the L.A. area...
Watch the KTLA 10pm news broadcast. Somewhere between 10:05 and 10:15, Hal Fishman will go to their Washington correspondent, Grant Rampy.
This isn't a commentary on Rampy's broadcasting skills; he's fine.
It's a comment on the way the guy says his name when he signs off.
Take a listen. It's bizzare.
He'll do an entire story without the slightest trace of an accent... and then he says his own name. It's tweaked. And has some un-placeable drawl.
"In Washington, Graaaaaaaaaannnnnt Raaaaaaaahmmmmpeeeeey, KTLA News."
Listen-- you'll see. I'm not crazy.Do it again the next night, and THIS TIME, do me another favor: say, "Graaaaant Raaaampeeeey, KTLA News" along with the guy.
Hey, it always gives ME a giggle. It's a nightly ritual now. Even the wife gets in on the reindeer games.
Join in... it'll be our secret, "I'm as mad as hell..." club chant (except in a dorkier sort of way).
I think a lot of newscasters/reporters are trying to get some attention, and if they can't be good reporters, then they have to stand out with some irritating sign-off. KYW radio in Philly has 3 of the most obnoxious folks: Fred Sherman, grandfather of the irritating signoff ("I'm Fred Sherrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrman"), Amy Kaplan (who sounds like she's singing the news as opposed to reporting it), and Hadas Kuznits (who suddenly gets a burst of energy and SHOUTS her last name). These folks suck, and they want that little bit of extra attention...I guarantee you this happens all over the country.

ReplyDeleteThis is so heart-warming that I had to write. We have watched GRR-AAAANT RAAAAMPY for a long time on WGN-TV in the Chicago area. His sign-off has had us in hysterics for years! Because we have no life, we have made up an imaginary family for him...starting with his wife PEE-AAAAATY REEE-AAMPY. Kids,dogs, cats, etc. Really made the miles fly on that road trip!
ReplyDeleteThis is so funny! I found your blog because I was sure that KTLA was misspelling his name and I typed Grant Rampy into google. It sounds like he says Grant Zrampy -- or Grants Srampy. It befuddles me every night and now I'm tickled to know that others are as taken with him as I am.

I think he's kind of toned the signoff down lately. I watch him on WGN in Chicago and I'll have to admit I'm not interested in his stories (he is a very good speaker) but I just wait for his signoff. He is nice looking and dresses very sexy and sharp. I just Googled him now after seeing him on the news about 1 hour ago. I was surprised I wasn't the only one who took note of his signoff.
